Since debuting his solo project in the summer of 2019, George Huntington has shown himself to be a prolific songwriter with an ear for melody and generous detail. Although his music is coated in a similar aura of melancholy and mystery, no two songs ever sound quite the same. Over three EPs, we’ve been treated to slow-burning ballads, moody indie-pop epics, and cryptic electronic experiments—all delivered with the sort of quiet intimacy that makes you want to throw on your headphones and shut out the world.

George’s latest single finds him collaborating once again with his former Padre bandmate Jack Blauvelt (Neighbor Lady, Semicircle). Together they create a hypnotic backdrop of softly pulsing beats, quirky synths, and gentle acoustic guitars that wrap you tightly in a warm cocoon of sound. The song’s movement is easygoing and serene, drifting in and out of focus like a hazy late-afternoon daydream.

Huntington isn’t an especially powerful singer; his reserved delivery doesn’t require much projection or physical force. What he does have, however, is a keen instinct for bending simple hooks into surprising — even revelatory — shapes. Here, his vocals are supported by Chicago transplant Sue Reon Kim, whose gorgeous harmonies add a sense of celestial majesty to the track’s languid grooves. Altogether it’s an enveloping listen from an artist who continues to find intriguing ways to delight and impress.

“Shelton Inn” is the first single from George’s upcoming LP, Far Away Near By, which should be out sometime in late summer or early fall. All proceeds from the track will be donated to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund in support of protestors who have been arrested for taking action against social injustice.
