The evolution displayed by Powerkompany’s new single “Can’t Cry” is jarring but believable, a musical version of punctuated equilibrium. In one sense, the track is such a noticeable departure from their previous work it makes the listener wonder if it is the same band. However, the rich vocals and dreamy synth base which have made Powerkompany such popular Athens mainstays, remain.

2015 has been a quiet year for the husband and wife team of Marie Davon and Andrew Heaton, but “Can’t Cry” was worth the wait. The band’s name seems more appropriate for post-punk than a pop duo, but within the simplicity of their string-driven music, there is an inerrant force which pulls the listener into the songs and displays the underlying dance floor tendencies of their music. Though Powerkompany have occasionally teased their poppier side, the new track abandons the electro-folk of previous albums for a baroque interpretation of ’80s pop. This development alone makes the track one of the catchier songs from 2015, but Davon’s rich voice is what makes “Can’t Cry” worthy of repeat listens. The classical intricacies, combined with a disco beat, vaguely sounds like Florence Welch at a roller rink, but it somehow works perfectly. Listen below.

“Can’t Cry” is the first single from Powerkompany’s upcoming two-part album, Fever & Chills, due out February 5.

Powerkompany will perform on Friday, January 22 at Smith’s Olde Bar. Supporting them will be Brooklynn and Fairshake. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $8.
