Without the petri dish of live music new bands have been hard to come by, but “Sinking” is a jolt of fresh blood from two musicians who have already been at it a long time. NRCSSST is the endeavor of Stephanie Luke (The Coathangers) and Dan Dixon (PLS PLS, Dropsonic), who were already teasing the idea of a project in 2019 before the pandemic scrambled their plans for another alternative band with an abbreviated name. With the release of “Sinking,” their anthemic sound has taken a more concrete shape thanks in part to their stacked backing band of drummer Chandler Rentz (Snowden), bassist Danny Silvestri (Trances Arc), and keyboardist André Griffin (PLS PLS).

The song details the pull of dead-end relationships, both with people and places, but despite the melancholy topic, “Sinking” comfortably wraps the listener up in well-tempered pop hooks and alt-rock energy. Listeners should expect nothing less from Luke and Dixon, who have both been around enough to see musical trends come and go. Together, they display the confidence and steady songwriting of seasoned vets, while remaining willing to break a few rules of the classic indie rock formula.
