The vocalist/producer responsible for deadCAT’s twisted sounds and psychotic feel is back with a solo track that picks up the trio’s grimy mantle and carries it further into the swampy abyss.
On “Darkdaze,” Britt Teusink, writing under the moniker Kid Mouth, balances the murky style of mid ’00s witch house with a skeletal rigidity pioneered by ’80s goth. Yet much like deadCAT, within the pulsing darkness lies pieces and parts of a pop song, even if it feels stitched together like Frankenstein’s monster. This is the inversion of Atlanta’s trap scene. Here, the buildup is elongated but never resolved, and the beat drop is just an illusion. Though most of this song is more linear and not quite as weird than Teusink’s work with deadCAT, it is a sharpening, if not an evolution towards something equally as powerful.
deadCAT have been relatively quiet since releasing their fantastically dense Neutered EP in early 2015, so it’s nice to have something so typically outlandish to tide us over until they open for French prog rock masterminds Magma at Aisle 5 on March 29. Word is Kid Mouth will have an EP out in late April or early May, so stay tuned. In the meantime, give a listen to “Darkdaze” below.
