Quite possibly my favorite thing about Kenny Mason is just how malleable he is. His tracks are rarely about refining his aesthetic, so much as switching things up and exploring new sounds and styles. Listening to “New Spirit,” his latest collaboration with producer DvDx, you can hear elements of alternative pop and airy electronica, all wrapped up in a vibrant hip-hop shell. It all makes for one of Mason’s more accessible tracks, but that doesn’t mean there’s any less heat emanating from the pair of verses the rapper offers up here.
Much like Chance the Rapper, Mason possesses the ability to sound both playful and introspective even as he’s pounding his chest, and here he puts that skill to good use. “Don’t give a fuck about no chain, that shit can turn into a leash,” he raps ahead of the first hook, his voice crackling with radiant energy while gushing keyboards bloom and burst in the background. It’s an emphatically exuberant track, both in its expansive execution and its bouncy verve, and I, for one, can’t wait to see what Mason conjures up next.
