Atlanta-based Gwai Mak is a relatively new R&B artist working within a hazy, soul-doused aesthetic that sits well with the crooner’s woozy vocals. His adopted moniker means “Black Ghost” in Cantonese, which is fitting considering the low profile he maintains. Little is known about the singer-songwriter besides the fact he writes, arranges, and produces his own music, although it’s clear he isn’t above some collaboration now and then. His latest single “Always” was engineered by Apollo, and together the pair manage to craft a bittersweet ode to burgeoning love that sounds both classic and fresh.
