For an album that spends much of its time mining the music of the past, Faces, the debut full length from Sydney Eloise & the Palms, feels considerably timeless. Take, for example, the group’s latest single, “I Like You,” which we’re excited to be premiering today. It’s a song that flirts with ‘60s soul and ‘90s alt-country—sounds which, given the current musical landscape, could easily come off as dusty and anachronistic. But with a performance that is both is both breezy and spirited, Eloise and her cohorts manage to encase the tune in a velvety pop sheen that feels classic and fresh.

Given the title, it’s not surprising that “I Like You” is a love song; more specifically, it’s song about a relationship that’s still unsettled, one in which doubt and fear play as big a role as lust and attraction. “Open the windows and let me breathe / I need air so I can see if it is you who changed me” Eloise sings, but its unclear whether that plea is due to the protagonist’s anxiety or the heat of their desire. The track ends without a definite resolution, tying up what is, on the surface, an upbeat song in a loose ribbon of tension. Listen below.

Faces is out tomorrow on vinyl and CD via the Cottage Recording Co. Limited-edition cassettes are also available from Bear Kids Recordings.

Syndey Eloise & the Palms will celebrate the release of Faces on Fri., Oct. 2 at MASS Collective. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $10 for admission and a CD and $20 for admission and a vinyl LP.
