The Coathangers - Nosebleed Weekend

The Coathangers – Nosebleed Weekend

[ Suicide Squeeze Records ]

There seems to be a perception that Nosebleed Weekend is a departure for the Coathangers, that the SoCal sound embraced on much of the new record means they have moved away from their Southern garage-punk roots. But, if anything, the album proves the Coathangers are still down to party ten years after their inception. These are still the scrappy punks that honed their skills at Star Bar and do whatever the hell they want to do musically. If that means throwing some glittery garage-pop songs on the new record or if it means using a chew toy as an instrument, they’re gonna do it. And you’re probably gonna like it. – RR

Danger Incorporated - World Wide Web

Danger Incorporated – World Wide Web

[ Self-released ]

Danger Incorporated’s most formidable asset has always been their ability to balance Louie Duffelbags’ ethereal R&B stylings with Boothlord’s gauzy trap flows. Listen to almost any track on World Wide Web and you’ll find it brimming with romantic overtures that are countered by bars about — what else — smoking up, rolling out, stepping to your haters. It’s a compelling dichotomy that works in part because despite their divergent approaches the pair remain locked into a singular vision. Except for “Atlanta Neighborhood,” there’s nothing that resembles a banger on the EP. The tracks, especially impressionistic cuts like “Body” and “World Wide Web,” are too mercurial and elastic — they’re compact in length, but spacious in their breadth. The fact of the matter is these aren’t songs built for turning up in the club, they’re nebulous soundscapes constructed for the after party when the night blurs and memory fades into oblivion. – GC

The Difference Machine - The 4th Side of the Eternal Triangle

The Difference Machine – The 4th Side of the Eternal Triangle

[ Psych Army Intergalactic ]

The Atlanta music scene is often described as a divided cluster of disparate micro-scenes. If such is the case, the Difference Machine seem to be able to create bridges that span to each different territory. The group’s mix of psychedelic beats and conscious lyrics appeals to hip-hop heads, scruffy rockers, and weirdos alike, making them regulars on the local festival circuit. Their latest LP, The 4th Side of the Eternal Triangle, is their most accomplished and exploratory work to date, a triumph of compositional bravado and mind-expanding poetry that grabs the experimental hip-hop mantle and lifts it deep into the stratosphere. – GC

Eureka California - Versus

Eureka California – Versus

[ HHBTM Records ]

Eureka California’s new album Versus encases wisdom and bitterness within a thunderclap. Clear-eyed and introspective, Jake Ward and Marie Uhler trudge down a path walked by everyone from Dylan to Springsteen to the Replacements. Recorded in the UK under the guiding eye of MJ from psychedelic noise-punks Hookworms, the record alternates between acoustic witticisms and noisy confessionals, and is both a powerful addition to the band’s catalog and decisive step forward in their songwriting. – RR

Femignome - Anxt

Femignome – Anxt

[ Irrelevant Recordings ]

Guitarist/vocalist Anna Jacobson is far too earnest to associate with a genre built on enshrouding irony and detachment in music that is breezy and relaxed. At times it feels like she can’t quite contain her enthusiasm and all that excess energy spills over into her vocals resulting in an assortment of yelps, squeals, and screams that puncture her hooks and lend the album an air of unpredictability. And it’s that tension — the one between Jacobson’s zealous entreaties and Femignome’s casual, swinging grooves — that makes Anxt so compelling. At their core, these are simple songs rooted in ’60s pop and early ’90s alt-punk that feel warmly familiar, and it only takes a few listens before the urge to sing along sets in. – GC
