Although Thayer Sarrano’s popularity grew out of her work with Of Montreal, the Athens-based artist has collaborated with everyone from Futurebirds to Kishi Bashi. Her vocal style has drawn comparisons to PJ Harvey and Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, and her new single, “Crease,” is a powerful addition to her catalogue.

Within the first few guitar chords, Sarrano weaves the listener into a dark, intimate web. The insistent floor tom echoes like a battle call to a war long over, and she howls and whispers throughout the ominously beautiful soundscape. Like many of her songs, “Crease” is about loss. Sarrano looks at a broken relationship through a spiritual microscope, allowing the listener to watch as the energy holding two people together dissolves and becomes inexorable darkness. However, instead of wallowing in the bitterness of destruction, she finds peace in the emptiness. That release becomes the climax of the song and gives “Crease” much of its considerable power. Listen below.

Sarrano continues to expand her otherworldly universe and her third studio album, Shaky, promises more haunted echoes of Americana. It will be released on Aug. 28.
