The new single from Wiley from Atlanta opens with a jazzy Brazilian hook that conjures breezy tropical vibes. It lasts but for a few fleeting moments, a burst of radiant golden hour bliss that’s cutoff by an almost rude record scratch meant to clear the decks for the young phenom’s ambient hip-hop musings. If “August” was meant in any way as summer jam, than it’s certainly an ode to the end of the season when thoughts turn away from sand and sunshine and back to the realities of work and school. It also marks an end to the romance of summertime flings, and if there is something that Wiley from Atlanta has proven himself especially adept at, it’s examining the subtle nuances between relationships that are either blossoming, or in this case, struggling from lack of trust and communication. Still, he leaves room for hope. “She looks way too pretty in them sweats / She’s too intimidating in that sundress / She’s spending summer waiting on a text / Now she’s up against the pillow while we undress,” he croons over the track’s murky beat, reminding us that just as seasons change, so do our opportunities.
