If “Canadian Tuxedo” was Wieuca’s escapist summertime anthem, a breezy, buoyant nod to the numbing effects of daydreaming and day drinking, then “Polyp” is that track’s moody autumnal cousin. Although both songs trade in existential anxiety, addressing issues of mortality and the passing of time, the former sought to counter the encroaching dread with sun-baked reverie while the latter seems content to succumb to the shadows.
That’s not to say the single is all gloom and doom. On the surface, the song’s warm psych-rock haze envelops you like a cozy sweater. The songwriting is rich and evocative, full of magic moments that overlap and intersect. Here gentle rolling rhythms press up against gauzy vocals, there a shimmering guitar evokes the waning evening light sifting through the leaves. Everything feels calm and idyllic until you lean in to catch a glimpse of the words echoing in the distance.
“You know the worst part is that you’ll always be alright / And everything you love will pass before your eyes / Mouth on the bottle, yeah you drink until it’s dry / Every night,” goes the final verse, any pretense of tranquility dissipating quickly. By the time the pedal steel comes streaking through like a blood-red October sunset, it’s too late. Night has set in, and the loneliness isn’t far behind.
