Taken as advertised — that is, as a teaser for their upcoming record, Slowest Century — here are some things we may infer from Weary Heads’ new single: the impending release will be moody and abrasive, a gothic slab of adrenalized aggression and industrial-laced alt rock that basks in throbbing distortion and broken glass grooves. It will arrive with an element of tunefulness, a not too insincere play for accessibility that’s smashed up against coarse, teeth-gnashing guitars. In other words, it will be some heavy, dark-hearted shit, but there will be some measure of melody and pop charisma that will keep luring you back for more.
Indeed, in some ways it’s as if “Crept You” were purposefully constructed to serve as an introduction to Weary Heads’ sonic bag of tricks. The primal riffs, the volcanic shoegaze eruptions, the dead-eyed vocals — they all spring forth one after another before congregating in a fit of queasy and acerbic atmospheres. Weary Heads have spent over three years now toiling in the Atlanta underground, and this sounds every bit like a band on a mission. It’s sharp and forceful, but most of all it’s focused, a potent salvo from a group ready and hoping to make the next leap.
