There’s something oddly familiar about the way the drones wrap themselves around you in Warm Deltas’ new single “Hiding.” The psychedelic tendencies of longtime mystic voyager Cyrus Shahmir (The N.E.C., Night Cleaner) are readily apparent on the first offering from his solo project’s forthcoming Rex Virginem EP, out May 20.

Shahmir recently left Atlanta for a change of pace by way of Los Angeles, packing up his instruments and gear and high-tailing it across the continental U.S. A couple of months before leaving, Warm Deltas released Burning Paisley, a six-song EP that saw the songwriter delving deeper into the textured, transcendental sound he explored on his solo debut, She Went to Japan. His latest effort seeks to swim through the same heady, surreal atmospheres, but with sharper focus and clarity.

There’s not a lot to “Hiding” as far as an arrangement goes. Once all the elements of the songs have been introduced, the listener essentially rides the wave of psychedelia for four minutes. A clear chordal structure keeps the track grounded as a vast aural landscape is painted around it, pulling the listener further into a radiant dream. Warm Deltas has managed to pull all of these components together into a cohesive song, though at times it feels like it’s all barely held together. But the experience of Shahmir’s music has always been deeply rooted in a sonic presentation — the droning echoes and the lush textures that shimmer and glow like an hallucinogenic Pacific sunset that the artist chased westward.

Rex Virginem is out May 20 via Pysch Army Intergalactic. Pre-orders are available here.
