Released in July, TMI America, the new LP from Atlanta’s Hip to Death, is a simmering cauldron of jet-washed post-punk and white-noise delirium. It’s an album that favors texture and atmosphere over hooks, haunting backdrops to pummeling rhythms. Case in point is the feverish “Burning Heart.” At its onset, the track is a clattering, anxiety-laced ripper. But the longer it sticks around the more it retreats into shadowy darkness with John Breedlove’s dead-stare monotone leading the way.
Directed by guitarist Kasey Breedlove and starring Rose Riot, the mostly stark black and white video makes for a fitting accompaniment to the track’s caustic paranoia. Part smirk-streaked strip tease and part neon face paint nightmare, the visuals teeter between the decadent and the surreal. Throughout it all, the band thrash in the background, willing participants in the clip’s gritty portrayal of lurid dread.
