Instead of taming the Coathangers’ sound, popularity has sharpened their attack and amplified their ferocity. Their new video for “Watch Your Back” demonstrates they can match the raucous energy of their live show in the studio.

Between sipping cocktails, the trio flits between the studio and stage, creating a unique time travel effect. The studio footage and b-roll hangout sessions feel like they were shot in 1965, but the live footage is firmly rooted in today’s modern festival era.

Apart from allowing the band to display different aspects of their shared chemistry, director Matt Odom uses these two environments to define the opposing sides of the Coathangers’ identity — on one hand, a ’60s girl group parody, and on the other, Riot grrrl revivalists.

Even as their identity and sound has changed over the past few years, “Watch Your Back” is another example the Coathangers aren’t done reinterpreting rock and roll, and they still sound effortless while doing so.

The “Freedom Fries” b/w “Watch Your Back” split 7″ with Black Lips is available now via Suicide Squeeze Records.

The Coathangers will perform on New Year’s Eve at the Earl. Supporting them will be Black Linen, Bad Spell, and the Gartrells. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $17 in advance or $20 at the door.
