The first full length from post-punk trio Shepherds was a rich, if bleak, assessment of rock and roll and the passage of time. Exit Youth was the kind of record which seemed to blossom in the cold winter months, when self-reflection hangs heavy in the cloud-darkened skies. With their new video for the track “I’m Too True,” the band provides a visual template for their genre-shattering style.

Shepherds pay tribute to ’80s greats Jesus and the Mary Chain and INXS throughout the LP with assembly line drums and deadpan vocals. The video plays off the same nostalgic inspiration on a stage of industrial decay. Within this abandoned cityscape, a delightfully disengaged performance by bassist Peter Cauthorn and drummer Adrian Swinton is balanced by frontman Jonathan Merenivitch’s inspired guitar work.

Throughout the clip, the trio feel like the only living creatures in a world scarred by failed creations. The result is both disturbing and somehow uplifting, fitting for a band known for their twisted amalgam of punk and soul.

Exit Youth is available now via Muckman Records.

Shepherds will perform on Friday, March 11 when they open for the Gotobeds and Motherfucker at 529. Doors open at 9 p.m. $8 gets you in.
