You know, the time will come when these days are over. You can take that however you want: your 4-year-old child will outgrow her infant toys; the friends that occupied your long summer nights will move out of town; the gigs that once meant everything to you will gently recede from your life. Maybe the streets that seemed like heaven two years ago are roads to limbo now. Another phase always waits over the horizon, when you embrace a dynamic self and allow the inevitable flow of time to take its course.
Jordan Reynolds can talk all about shifts. Two years ago, the singer-songwriter migrated to Atlanta from Bowling Green, Kentucky in search of a new beginning, and gigged about with just her breezy guitar under the new moniker Rose Hotel. These days, Reynolds is hardly ever alone, both on stage with her revolving crew and off-stage around town; if you didn’t know better, you’d easily mistake her for a native.
Small wonder, then, that the afternoon sun beams down so fondly on this city in the video for “10 K.” Here, a montage of scenes from Atlanta roll by, as bright and warm as a postcard set in motion by your 8th grade teacher’s dusty projector screen. Snapshots from Little Five Points and East Atlanta Village whizz by like scenes from a family vacation, as Reynolds sings about time’s inevitable march onward over the hazy daydream. She might sound a bit wistful about wrinkles, but tapping on the watch screen like this also encourages the listener to move on, to start something new before the chance to do so flies by. Again, you can take that however you want—a new mate, a new house, a new occupation, any chapter that succeeds another. Because no matter how golden the past may gleam, the memories you’ve not yet created could shine brighter still.
