The difference between nostalgic inspiration and dated retread is elusively thin, but post-grunge trio Pretty Please have generally remained on the right side of history by assailing everything they do with tenacious insistence. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that singer and guitarist Robee Whitmire knows just how to tear into a hook or that years in the trenches have weathered the group’s attack into something resembling a bludgeoning powerhouse. But there’s no denying the threesome’s musical approach is indebted much to the past, as the band’s frequent comparisons to Nirvana and other icons of the flanneled ’90s would rightfully attest.
Shot and directed by Jordan Eley, “Lowered Expectations” offers the sort of grimy, lurking-in-the-shadows aesthetic we’ve come to expect from the trio—lots of jittery cuts and closeups of the band thrashing their instruments in a deserted barn—but the song’s bruising jolt of aggro rock helps keep it from settling into the comfortably familiar. Instead, Pretty Please rip into the track with renewed vigor, which, considering the band’s feisty, fuck-all demeanor, is really saying something. It’s the first taste from the group’s upcoming Fur Model LP, and damn if it isn’t a searing, discordant mouthful.
