Welcome to the 2020s! Hope and redemption are in the air. New year. New lives. New everything. By the sound of it, Wanderwild know what’s up. While the rest of us are in bed nursing hangovers, fumbling about the house, or—god forbid—off at work, the Athens five-piece are out here dropping new music and revealing exciting evolutions in their sound. “In Repeat” is a jittery jam full of twitchy guitars and zig-zagging grooves that tackles questions of failure and accountability. In style and tone, it’s reminiscent of Parquet Courts or maybe fellow locals Omni, but rather than delivering their existential musings with deadpan cool, the group maintains the infectious pop sheen that has consistently shown up in their work.
“‘In Repeat’ is swirling, breathing, controlled chaos,” says guitarist and vocalist Matt Martin. “We wrote and recorded it in a beautiful cabin in the woods in North Georgia. It’s about trying your best, yet coming up short time and time again. It’s about choosing the easy way out instead of the right way out, even when you know better. It’s imperfect but striving, just like all of us.”
Directed by Reagan C. Byrd and Jessie Moore, the video is an assemblage of studio outtakes and live footage captured in Athens and Tampa. Much of the studio portion focuses on the interplay between drummer Wes Gregory and bassist Taylor Cotton, which honestly is a perfect choice. So much of the track’s bracing energy is dependent on their dialed-in interaction and to watch it play out in real-time is a treat.
