Every time I think I have the Head pegged, they make a slight detour and veer off into the distance. Mind you, these aren’t huge seismic shifts in terms of sound and style, but just enough to get you to make you reassess the band and see them in a different light. The Atlanta trio have always had a solid grasp of hooks, but lately their songwriting has taken on darker shapes and more beguiling moods. Although rooted in the jaunty indie rock that has fueled much of their success, new single “Comatose” interjects a heady dose of brooding atmosphere, resulting in a track that ripples with melodic tension and expressive nuance.
Created by Coalesce Films, the video mirrors that moody aura with grainy black and white footage the places the band members in what appears to be some sort of shabby mid-century domestic setting. Dressed in all black, bassist and vocalist Mike Shaw takes center stage, singing glumly to the camera, his eyes streaked with dark paint. Like the song, it’s a commentary on how the mundane patterns we allow ourselves to sink into rob of us our passion, exchanging the thrill of the unknown for quiet comfort. Visually, it’s a little on the nose, but combined with the song’s murky grooves and killer chorus, it’s well worth your time.
Watch/listen above.
In support of their latest batch of singles (in addition to “Comatose,” the group also recently released the sparkling mid-tempo jam “Cut Me Out”), the Head is currently in the midst of a 24-date tour that is taking the band through the Midwest, down the East Coast, and into the Southeast.
