Summersick, the new project from Chris Senador of Antarcticats, is brimming with sunny harmonies, earnest lyrics, and a whole lot of infectious hooks. The group’s anthemic debut would be perfect for any windows-down drive playlist, or more realistically, as a cure-all for the pandemic blues. It’s instantly singable chorus will ring in your head for days. The individual elements combine seamlessly into a brilliant piece of songwriting that lands somewhere between the Strokes and early Duran Duran.
Filled with outsized pep, there’s a certain level of wishfulness to the speaker’s enthusiasm to get out of Dodge. It’s an expression of hope and acceptance that Senador readily embraces.
“I was depressed for several years up until somewhat recently,” he explains. “‘Out of Town’ was written as a celebration of my newfound desire to get out, travel, and find new experiences, after breaking out of those years of depression. It was also written to reflect my feelings and desire for an emotional vacation after having been emotionally shut in for so long. I was on a journey to heal myself, and I still am.”
The video’s striking visuals make a nice compliment to Senador’s sincere lyrics about wanderlust. Along with his brother and bandmate Nick, Senador poses in a variety of tableaus and disguises accompanied by a healthy dose of comic sans and Powerpoint realness. It’s silly and a whole lot of fun.
