Do you ever feel like you’re following a twisting road toward a place you don’t want to go? Maybe you’re heading home for the holidays or trying to find a little patch of light somewhere in these slate sky days. On “After/Omina” Jordan Reynolds bravely ventures into that uncanny feeling. There’s a tangible tension. At times, the eerie backdrop threatens to unearth a buried feeling. At others, the fear seems so roaring that it’s impossible to believe you ever repressed it.

Directed by Caroline Barber, the accompanying video is part horror film, part digital purgatory. The songwriting here shows off a heady, barebones, more emotionally fraught version of Rose Hotel. Reynolds has always been good at seeking out new musical directions to her songs. Her latest EP, The House That We Knew, binds elliptical songwriting with aching melodies and opaque harmonies.

At the end of the video, there’s a kind of reunion where the self meets the self. I’m not sure why but I’m suddenly more apprehensive than ever about what I’m going to find when I follow those curvy roads back to my family home this week.
