Immaterial Possession’s incandescent expression of ethereal yet bittersweet wonderment is well played on their newest release, “Sugar in a Memory.” The group, which sprung from the artist community nestled in the decayed decadence of 368 Ponce, is the creative child of Madeline Polites and Cooper Holmes whose energies delicately dance around one another in waves of both dreaminess and despair.

The pragmatic yet poetic stop motion animation of Lindsey Elcessor reaches beyond the space and time of genres and trends with a more organic approach to music video creation. A fairy tale-esque fable, “Sugar in a Memory” is shrouded in mysterious antiquity drawing from the most intrinsic toils of the human condition. Centering around a skeletal character who weaves through processes of Ego, self-perception, love, and desperation, Elcessor’s visuals mirror Polites’ lyrical loss and longing.

Assisted by a rotating cast of players (Anthony Attanasio’s currently provides live synths), the collaborative spirit between Polites and Holmes saw the project become more actualized during the span of 2017 and early 2018. Drummer John Spiegel, who also mixed and mastered the track, compliments the core energy of Immaterial Possession, elevating their melodic melancholia to a deeper sphere during performances.

Appropriately releasing on the spring equinox, there is no denying that “Sugar in a Memory,” in all its soft, sleepy, often lulling tones, flows with the omniscient chaos of change, creating beautiful musical magic throughout.

Immaterial Possession will perform tomorrow night, Mar. 21, at 529 alongside Anemone, Karaoke, and Video Age. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10. 21+ to enter.
