Singer-songwriter Rebecca Ramos, a.k.a. I The Victor, writes sparkling indie-pop anthems full of earnest emotions and small truths. It’s the kind of simple and heartfelt songwriting that some might dismiss as the diary musings of a young adult grappling with the innumerable complexities of growing older, which, to some extent they are. But to do so would be to miss out on what makes her music remarkable — her aura of authentic positivity, the infectious rhythms, her effortless phrasing.
In a way, Ramos’ new video for “Plans” feels like a visual extension of her songwriting aesthetic. It’s candid and unadorned, leaning far heavier on the strength and honesty of her performance than on clever camera angles or studio wizardry. The clip is meant to evoke Ramos’ feelings from her first U.S. tour, and what we’re left with, despite the song’s wistful lyrics, is an atmosphere of hopeful gratitude. As she travels across the country performing in the backseat of a car, you get the idea that she’d equally content performing these songs alone or among a few friends as she would in front of a crowd. It may not seem like much, but that sort of genuineness matters to people, allowing for stronger emotional connections between artist and fan. I The Victor appears to have a bright future, and Ramos’ willingness to wrap her fears and vulnerabilities in an outstretched and grateful hand is a big reason why.
