Athens trio Hunger Anthem have a new video for one of the strongest tracks from their 2015 EP, Cut the Chord. “It’s Relative” encases one-liners in a crunchy power-pop shell and wraps everything up before the two-minute mark. The song is short enough to make you want to hit repeat, and the clever lyricisms don’t feel too overdone thanks to the succinct nature of frontman Brendan Vaganek’s singing style.
The video matches the explosive pace of the track with a mix of tripped-out visuals, vintage cartoons, and performance footage. It’s lo-fi, but it’s a lo-fi built from the immediacy of the track rather than some patchwork laziness or passé aesthetic. The blinding lights and sweaty footage transport the viewer to Hunger Anthem’s Athens, a world where back porch hangouts are just as urgent and visceral as crowded clubs and wild road trips.
Hunger Anthem will be performing their brand of electrifying rock and roll at Athens Popfest in August (exact date TBD).
