My head is trapped again. The smallest incident can set this off, crossing the wires that relay corporeal and illusory information until I can’t discern which is which. Of course, I’m not about to complain—all external signs would suggest that I live comfortably enough. Likewise, the fey realm in this video hides a forlorn secret; women with glittery faces stare behind veils, while the drums drag you steadily into an Interpol-esque nadir. Matt Deakin describes an existence of futility from behind his own shroud: “Every time I try, I lie… every time I live, I die.” As with depression, appearances here betray the numbness underneath.
The three blokes of Feverest—and the director to this video, Olivia Barrett—likely don’t realize how well they’ve captured hopeless ennui here. But they’re more than familiar with the feeling, I’m sure. All three have been hopping around different bands around town for some time; Jake Crimmins, in particular (the bassist there, on the left in the group shot), has penned many a song about internal angst with his now retired outfit Crosstalk. Together, the boys with the most fever write moody bangers, but none sink the listener as far down as this one. I’m inclined to join them under the veil.
