If you’ve heard of Fairburn Royals, chances are you’ve been following the local music scene for quite a while. Formed in December of 2000, the indie rock four-piece were highly active in the early aughts, releasing three albums on Atlanta’s Two Sheds Music label between 2000 and 2005, and touring all over the East Coast. Eventually, however, life caught up with the Royals and the group disbanded as members either moved away or left to concentrate on their marriage and children.
But then, two years ago, after more than a decade-long hiatus, the band made the decision to reform when vocalist and guitarist Matt Lisle returned to Georgia, and the foursome found themselves eager to work on new material and begin performing again. The results of this renewed collaboration can be heard on Fairburn Royals’ recently released fourth album, ‘Til the Sun Disappeared, which is available now on most major digital platforms, as well as the group’s Bandcamp and SoundCloud pages.
Today, we bring you the premiere of the album’s first single and video “On the 32,” a spunky power pop gem that ramps up without warning and carries hints of genre forebears Cheap Trick. Any rust the band may have collected over the years has clearly been knocked off, as the band effortlessly melds buzzing guitars with hooky vocals to create a song that’s familiar in form, but still feels lively and anthemic.
As for the accompanying video, it’s the equivalent of a slow motion stroll down Georgia Avenue in the historic Summerhill neighborhood just south of downtown. The camera’s steady, almost purposeful pan serves as an interesting counter to the track’s forward-driving thrust and fizzy energy, and the longer you watch, the more the details seems to recede into the background, creating a hypnotic urban dreamscape to saunter through.
Watch/listen above.
Fairburn Royals will celebrate the release of ‘Til the Sun Disappeared on Sat., July 7 at Flicker Bar in Athens alongside VG Minus. Doors open at 10 p.m.
