There’s always something a little melancholy about the transition from summer to fall. As the long, carefree days slide back into the routine of work and school, it’s hard not to feel the drag of new expectations and—ugh—responsibility. Fortunately, however, we have Cowboy Curtys to remind us of the magic of all-day pool parties and backyard BBQs. The project’s first-ever video is an anthemic ode to the season that rides a driving backbeat and squalling guitars into summery bliss.
Taken from the group’s debut LP, Commotions, “Nantahala” finds bandleader Josh Parsons straddling the sweet spot between thoughtful introspection and rock and roll abandon. His vocals are measured and controlled, each line tumbling neatly into the next like a string of well-placed dominoes. On their own they’re nice enough, but when strewn against the backdrop of the band’s smoldering, slighty psychedelic ramblings, there’s an added jolt of electricity. It’s exactly the kind of hazy, roughshod jam you’ll want to throw on next time you’re cracking beers poolside.
Directed by Drew Beskin and put together by the team at Super Canoe, the video hits all the right summery vibes. As revelers cool off in the water, Parsons plays your defacto host, casually shifting from rooftop rocker to grill master to partygoer and back again. As Pasrsons himself admits, the clip isn’t about crafting a narrative, but more about celebrating achievements and sharing a good time.
“This is my first video for Cowboy Curtys, and I really wanted it to feel like a celebration of finishing the album more than anything else,” says Parsons. “We got lucky and secured this spot in EAV that provided the perfect backdrop. I wanted to bring you back to those late nineties-early aughts videos, with mini ramps and backyard BBQs, while the band plays. I feel like that’s what this video is. No storyline, just sexy and stylish vibes for a summer anthem.”
Sweater weather may be just around the corner but at least for now we can toss on some shades and bask in the warm glow of “Nantahala.”
Cowboy Curtys will perform on Fri., Sept. 9 at Flicker Theatre & Bar alongside Lo Talker and Feral Joy. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 in advance or $12 DOS. 18+ to enter.
