When “Breakfast” first dropped back in March it was something of a statement piece for rapper BOREGARD. Everything about the track—from the crisp rhymes and clever wordplay, to Ethan Lamb’s stabbing beat and off-kilter production—seemed to buck the streamlined archetypes of trap-pop without alienating fans just looking for the next banger to nod to. Overall it was an inspired slice of out-of-the-box song and beatcraft, one which, incidentally, took BOREGARD. all of thirty minutes to record.
The track is part of the rapper’s eagerly anticipated project Silence of the Lamb, which should see the light of day sometime next month. The title, of course, is a nod and wink to frequent collaborator Lamb who produced, recorded, and engineered the record. Call if a pat on the back if you will, but it’s certainly a testament to their relationship and the amount of faith BOREGARD. puts in Lamb’s work.
“Recording with Ethan brings out a peculiar confidence within me,” he says. “I try things that I wouldn’t otherwise if I was working with other people. We have a strict policy of honesty between us because we know that the music is what’s most important. We are each our own biggest critics though and that like-minded work ethic makes for a nice combination… There are multiple songs on the upcoming project where the concept was birthed from casual conversation. We just both have great imaginations and we love to run with ideas.”
Today we’re excited to bring you the premiere of the video for “Breakfast.” Created in collaboration with S2S Productions, the hilarious visuals play deftly off the humor and wit that BOREGARD. frequently injects into his songs. I won’t ruin the experience by outlining the events, but let’s just say that it involves the rise and violent fall of a sidewalk cereal empire. It a fantastic watch, and if BOREGARD. and Silence of the Lamb weren’t on your radar for what’s next in Atlanta hip-hop, you may want to jot it down now.
“It’s my best project,” BOREGARD. says without hesitation when I ask him about the upcoming record. “I told you Ethan brought about a new confidence within me. It gave me courage to push my limits sonically. It’s a side of me that I rarely, or ever, show. These songs are intimate, emotional, and raw.”
