Too often love songs are as empty and temporal as swiping left on a dating app. They’re sappy, predictable, and rarely offer profound insight into the complexities of relationships or romance. But while this may be the general rule, Blonde Bones’ latest cut “Sunny,” off their forthcoming full-length Hiding Out, breaks this pattern with clear-eyed ruminations and a captivating soundscape of lush synthesizers. Imagine Paul Simon inviting Roy Orbison to the Graceland sessions.

Throughout “Sunny,” vocalist and guitarist Christian Barnett poses questions to an unnamed beloved: “If I close / my eyes for too long, / will your side of the sink be empty when I wake up?” These poetic observations lionize domestic scenes into moments of cinematic significance that are bolstered by the trio’s fever dream swell of grooving bass and far-out jazzy guitars.

The video, directed by Chandler Galloway of Discount Gold, is a colorful DIY affair with the band members cracking wise at Holy Taco and hanging with the Standard Electric Recording Company crew. It’s straight out of a late ’80s home movie with a whole lot of grainy footage and earnest cheesing, which pair nicely with the song’s heartfelt themes.

Hiding Out is out Apr. 10.
