Athens’ own Muuy Biien sport a raucous, noise-punk style that’s always threatened to shake walls down to the ground, and that talent rears itself in provocative fashion on “Moral Compass.” Complemented by the disturbed film-work of Benjamin Roberds of Dominar Films, the song’s winding, methodical beat oozes tension with each kick, as if the track itself is shaking in a futile effort to contain itself and keep the inevitable burst of sonic violence at bay. In short time, that violence comes, and the squawking guitars and manic vocalizations bludgeon the listener into a twitching pulp. All the while, the video drags the listener through shoddy, graffiti-stained hallways and into the squirming tongue of what looks like a corpse bride. It’s pure, grim insanity with each ugly, morbid frame only enhancing the frenzied vibe of the track. If this marriage of visual narration and seething noise is a sign of things to come with Muuy Biien’s future endeavors, fans of sounds disgruntled and dangerous have much to look forward to.
Muuy Biien will perform on Sat., Jan. 28 at the Earl in support of Material Girls. Fellow locals DiCaprio, Shepherds, and Mannequin Lover will play in support. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. 21+ to enter.
