Of the many local records I’m looking to hear before 2015 has called it quits, you can go ahead and place Motherfucker’s debut LP, Confetti, right near the top of the list. The Athens trio churn out furious sludge and noise-rock bruisers smeared in just the right amount of calamitous hooks and psychedelic overtones, and the band’s latest single and title track from their upcoming album is certainly no exception. Propelled by stabbing guitars and an off-kilter groove, “Confetti” steamrolls its way through your speakers with focused hostility, jabbing and counter-punching, all the while measuring you up for the track’s final, ferocious knockout blow.
Directed by Athens’ Dominar Films and premiered this Tuesday on Flagpole, the group’s accompanying video, with its boxing and wrestling motifs and cartoon violence ending, is as an apt a metaphor as any for Motherfucker’s self-described “punch-in-the-air” brand of rock. It’s loud, aggressive, boisterous, and fun, but expect your share of cuts, scrapes, and bruises along the way.
Confetti is out July 30 via Chicago-based Sick Room Records.
