Local rapper and producer Fred E.T. first showed up on our radar last month when he submitted his single “Lv. 15 Charmander” for coverage consideration. Although his considerable mic skills and the track’s chill vibe and clever sampling had us intrigued, the cut was unfortunately lost in the shuffle of the holidays and the mad scramble of year-end list-making. Not to be deterred, however, the 22-year-old prospect from Henry County is back on the attack, this time with a new video for his latest slammer “Biscuits,” featuring the soulful stylings of vocalist Ymani Halle.
If you’re looking for a take on Fred E.T.’s style, I’d say it’s a bit of a blend of Kendrick Lamar’s West Coast jazz-hop and Outkast’s Dirty South funk. His flow, while still in need of some polish, is lightning in a bottle; it’s verbose and given to quick-witted flashes of dextrous wordplay. He’s got the talent and charisma to hold your attention for extended stretches, which certainly bodes well for the success of his upcoming LP, God Got a Funny Way of Showin’ It!, due out later this year.
Directed by Frederick E. Thomas and Aaron Dorsey, “Biscuits” reps Henry County with various scenes shot in downtown McDonough, as well as at the flea market and antique mall. For the most part it’s your typical lip syncing, camera mugging affair, but the brisk cuts and snappy pacing help maintain your interest. If you’re looking to ascribe some intention to Fred E.T. or get a sense of his aspirations, you probably need to look no further than the Jesus figure that pops up throughout the video (likely an allusion to his forthcoming record’s title) or the copy of Jay-Z’s The Blueprint he holds in one of the frames. This youngster is looking to make moves and a lot of noise in 2017, and he just fired his first shot.
