Dead Neighbors’ 2015 debut LP was an enterprising take on college rock, filled with relaxed basement jams and expansive pop. It was catchy, but not shiny enough to slip into the boring void where Urban Outfitters playlists go to die. There was a refreshing lack of concern for order or form and the band even threw in bits of ambient and shoegaze to temper the hooks.
Since the record was picked up by Fall Break Records, the band has been quiet other than playing a few shows around Athens and Atlanta. But now they are back with an extraterrestrial video guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any X-Files or MST3K fan.
Directed by Zak Washburn, the black and white video for “Tell” cuts between shots of the trio jamming in a field and spooky alien possession sequences. Guitarist and vocalist Sebastian Marquez navigates a world of handshakes and cigarettes in his new alienified world as saucers spin above. It’s a simple plot which balances art with goofiness, but it’s the perfect fit for the surfy vibes of the track.
Dead Neighbors will perform tomorrow night, Apr. 14, at Caledonia Lounge in support of the Rodney Kings. Death Stuff and Nihilist Cheerleader open the show. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5-7.
