It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly three years since we last heard from blctxt, but listening to new single “Time,” it’s clear the Atlanta wordsmith hasn’t lost his penchant for dispensing wisdom in his rhymes. The reflective cut sees him ruminating on the many ways our lives are bound and controlled by time, and how difficult it can be to wrench ourselves free from its unavoidable grasp. “Forward fast future always in our mind / Present banging for attention while we living in this time,” he spits over jazzy production from Cheeze Beatz, lamenting the temporal cycle that ensnares us all.
Directed by B. Chil, the video keeps a relatively low profile, depicting blctxt lost in thought and contemplative silence as he takes a late-night drive through downtown Atlanta. For the rapper, it’s these meditative moments that allow him to retreat from time’s merciless grind, and access a deeper, more spiritual plane.
“‘Time’ is a song about my daily struggle with making more out of every moment,” blctxt wrote in a Facebook post announcing the video. “Reality binds us with the concept of time but in our minds, time is almost nonexistent… Bhargava Chiluveru, the video director, instantly had a vision for this record and wouldn’t stop until it was brought to life. He got me into his world of simple yet mind altering visual effects.”
