It’s been nearly a month since rapper blctxt dropped the visuals for “Nothing Takes,” the title cut from his latest EP, but don’t let that stop you falling deep into the rabbit hole of his impassioned flow and quick-witted wordplay. With so many Atlanta MCs chasing vibes over substance, it’s refreshing to hear an artist focusing on their craft, and blctxt has always had a penchant for dispensing knowledge in the form of choice jewels and clever couplets. King I Divine’s production definitely leans a little old-school—all boom-bap funk and a soulful hook courtesy of Free Phareal—but the gliding groove proves perfect for blctxt’s artful storytelling and Nas shoutouts.
Visually, director B. Chil’s less-is-more approach is put to solid effect as the video shifts back-and-forth between the fiery reds that accompany blctxt and the cooler, more introspective blues that flow behind Free Phareal. It’s a simple contrast, but one that lends itself to repeated viewings as you journey through the maze of reflective rhymes blctxt lays out.
