Shoegaze outfit Twin Studies has kept a pretty low profile as of late. They were slow to release a follow-up after their Precious Places EP came out in February 2014, but when they unveiled their double single, “Attic Room” / “Space Girl,” last March, many of us were hoping that another EP was on the way.

It never came, but such is the way of local bands. Life happens and projects fall to the wayside. Plus, Twin Studies have restructured their lineup a few times over the past couple of years, and that’s a tough climate to write and record in.

Thankfully, the group hinted at new music last week when they dropped a demo of a new song called “Altered Image.” The track harkens back to giants of the genre like Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine, a common comparison for the band, but fair nonetheless. Maybe it’s the spacious wall of sound or the reverb-laden vocals — both of which are key elements of the style — but it doesn’t seem like many shoegaze bands can escape this likeness.

That being said, Twin Studies is trying to do their own thing. That’s respectable. And while we don’t know when we’ll see another EP (or a full length, fingers crossed), they’re taking their time writing new material and fleshing out their identity as a band, and it’s hard not to respect that, too.

Check out “Altered Image” below.
