Look, we know we throw a lot of new music at you. We also know that not everyone who comes to this site has the time to be as involved with or informed about the local scene as maybe they’d like to be. So for those casual readers who either can’t or have no interest in keeping up with the parade of artists we try to cover, who may not know the difference between Bitter and Biters, we have created our TRIPLE THREAT feature. The premise is simple: Every Friday our writers will put their heads together and come up with three tracks that grabbed our attention over that week. Then we tell you why the songs are great and worth listening to. That’s it. Maybe some weeks we’ll have a guest commentator come in and share their favorites, but the format will always remain the same: three songs, some words, and we out. Enjoy.

Divine Interface – “2 Naps”

From the upcoming compilation, Harsh Riddims Vol. 3

Drew Briggs digs negative space. Take any spin with his nocturnal alter ego Divine Interface, and you’ll find clean gaps carved into the contours of the road; ask for any explanation, and you’ll hear only bite-sized chunks of the full story. He mumbles these fragments, because that leaves you hungry for answers—you’re gonna dance when you’re on the floor, but at home you’ll crawl back in, head full of conspiracies. “2 Naps” delivers on both fronts—while it’s a sunnier route to Detroit house than we’re used to, Brigg’s mutated voice asks slippery questions that suggest a seedier past: “Is it ever OK to forget and not forgive? / Is it OK if I don’t have anything left to give?” The whispered imperative to “sleep” doesn’t shed any light, except that perhaps this mess started in bed, and that’s where it’ll end too, either with a self-willed insomnia or perpetual brooding. Who knows? All we can say is that “2 Naps” comes from an upcoming comp on Ryan Parks’ Harsh Riddims Blood Sucking Cassette label, which looks to be stacked with other familiar enigmas. – Lee Adcock

Harsh Riddims Vol. 3 is out June 15. Pre-orders are available here.

Fit of Body - Black Box No Cops

Fit of Body – “Sophisticated Adult Ent.”

From the upcoming LP, Black Box No Cops

As if his upcoming compilation wasn’t enough, Fit of Body just announced a follow-up full length to last year’s fantastic Healthcare LP and dropped the dramatic new track, “Sophisticated Adult Ent.” Ryan Parks, the wizard behind Harsh Riddims Records and Fit of Body has always had a knack for mixing hop-hop, house, and techno in way that buries his influences in a murky pool of dance floor hits that would sound at home in Detroit, Berlin, or a rainy train ride home. On the new single, Parks channels spaced-out exhaustion as he recounts a night at the strip club over a rippling groove that keeps the listener moving even as they get lost in the reverie. – Russell Rockwell

Black Box No Cops drops June 22 via 2MR. Pre-orders are available here.

Dream Culture – “Unwound”

From the EP, Heat Rises

Athens quintet Dream Culture are releasing their debut LP Heat Rises today, but not before sharing one last single from the 12-track collection. “Unwound” once again sees the band setting aside the sunny psychedelia of much of the past material in order to pursue a more cathartic and direct form of prog rock. It’s a welcome transition, in part because it forces the group to focus and tighten their core strengths: rhythm and melody, or more specifically, the interrelations between the two. True to its name, “Unwound” is a relentlessly uncoiling mass of serpentine riffs and circuitous grooves, but it’s the tension-filled hooks that keep it from unraveling into disarray. As a result, it’s one of the group’s more impressive singles, another key to unlock whatever mysteries Heat Rises may hold. – Avery Shepherd

Heat Rises is out today.
