Look, we know we throw a lot of new music at you. We also know that not everyone who comes to this site has the time to be as involved with or informed about the local scene as maybe they’d like to be. So for those casual readers who either can’t or have no interest in keeping up with the parade of artists we try to cover, who may not know the difference between Bitter and Biters, we have created our TRIPLE THREAT feature. The premise is simple: Every Friday our writers will put their heads together and come up with three tracks that grabbed our attention over that week. Then we tell you why the songs are great and worth listening to. That’s it. Maybe some weeks we’ll have a guest commentator come in and share their favorites, but the format will always remain the same: three songs, some words, and we out. Enjoy.
Dinner Time – “Monterey”
From the “Tell Me Why” + “Monterey” Single
If you believed everything you read about millennials, you’d probably think that the kids are too cool for old-fashioned romance. But indie darlings Dinner Time aren’t in any hurry, and as “Monterey” demonstrates, they’ll happily trade in any modern sense of hipness for a big ol’ sloppy hug. Love doesn’t always pan out like this rocking chair sing-a-long, but, as the Beach Boys once crooned together, wouldn’t it be nice? Also, who knows if the boys intended to write a genderless love song, but so they did—so everybody can lean back to this one and dream of following their lover’s whims. – Lee Adcock
Dinner Time will perform on Fri., Jan. 25 at the Drunken Unicorn alongside Camp Howard and World Map. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $7 in advance or $10 at the door. 18+ to enter.

The Coathangers – “Bimbo”
From the forthcoming LP, The Devil You Know
If you were hoping the Coathangers would come storming out of the gate with “Bimbo,” the first single and lead track from their upcoming sixth studio LP, The Devil You know, you may initially be disappointed. But stick around for a moment and let those overdriven guitars kick in, and suddenly that old cathartic rush comes charging back. If we can take “Bimbo” as a signal for things to come, the new record would seem to seek a merger between the California pop and rock the trio began exploring in earnest with Nosebleed Weekend, and the spunky punk they cut their teeth on over a decade ago. Which is just fine by me. The Coathangers have proven themselves capable of charting new growth, and “Bimbo” feels like yet another worthy evolution. – Avery Shepherd
The Devil You Know is due out Mar. 8 via Suicide Squeeze Records. Pre-orders are available here.

Matthew DeLoach – “The Year of Fasting”
From the standalone single
It’s not especially surprising that Matthew DeLoach decided to release his latest track outside the umbrella of his Mannequin Lover moniker, but although the song is a departure from DeLoach’s standard darkwave output it still relies on the same plumate sensuality that echoes through his more gloomy work. Hints of bedroom pop collide with ambient R&B to form a softly glowing spectre of a track, yet what truly sets “The Year of Fasting” apart is the fractured religious imagery and DeLoach’s detached delivery. – Russell Rockwell
Mannequin Lover will perform on Fri., Jan. 18 at CLUB SODA: A Funky House Party at the Deep End alongside Nyveda and DJ Taradactyl. Music starts at 10 p.m. Admission is FREE.
