The new single from the Callous Daoboys is 1:25 of explosive, balled-fist chaos. And not the unbridled kind, either. No sir. “The Great Multi-Stage Rocket Robbery” is riotous to be sure, but the band’s frenetic intensity is far more controlled than all those handspring riffs and rhythmic back flips would suggest. It’s the first taste of music we’ve gotten since the band solidified their lineup by adding Jackie Buckalew on bass and Sam Williamson on drums, and boy, does this sucker rip. If I had to ascribe to it some sort of formula it would be half Every Time I Die metalcore blitzkrieg and half Cursive art punk experimentation, but slapping generic genre labels on this caustic firestorm really does it a disservice. The Callous Daoboys have been on the come-up for a hot minute, but this latest rager suggests the band may be on the precipice of a major leap. Blast this one loud.
The Callous Daoboys will perform tonight at the Masquerade alongside Mac Sabbath and Get Those Nerds. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $17. All Ages.
