“Bon Voyage”
Earlier this year, Atlanta newcomers the Threats emerged out of seemingly nowhere and promptly made their intentions clear with the caustic, cutthroat “Bon Voyage.” A blistering blast of adrenaline-charged riffs and scorched-earth vocals, the track successfully blended metal precision with unrelenting hardcore intensity, firmly establishing the Atlanta foursome as a band to watch in 2018 and beyond. – GC
“Baby”
The shimmering melodies of “Baby” invoke the nonchalant cool of the ‘00s Gold Coast scene, but even if the track begs for a Flight Facilities remix, the underlying emotional complexity proves there’s more to True Blossom than inspired nightlife cuts. – RR
“Glass Breaks Glass”
‘Hypnotic’ can have separate meanings, depending on the context. There’s the spellbinding quality of leaving you transfixed, unable to respond to other stimuli. And then there’s the feeling of being transported, of being immersed in an altogether different version of reality. TWINS’ post-industrial synths and shadowy dance grooves always seem to yield that latter, and “Glass Breaks Glass,” the lead track from Matt Wiener’s engrossing new album, will invade your headspace in all sorts of beguiling ways. – GC
“Disc Fallout”
It can be difficult to absorb Warning Light tracks when removed from his albums as a whole, but this percussive masterpiece stands out. The delicate syncopation builds an air of suspense without sacrificing the meditative ambience which makes “Disc Fallout” and the rest of Warning Light’s work so rejuvenating. – RR
“Anointed”
Possibly the most poetic entry in Yani Mo’s illustrious catalog, “Anointed” arrives awash in impressionistic ambience courtesy of producer EVNB. But it’s the rappers’s heady personal and spiritual revelations that steal the show as Yani Mo turns existential turmoil into a gripping, heartfelt anthem for the ages. – AS
