At just 21-years-old, $ODAMAN is one of the youngest artists from Atlanta making a name for himself in hip-hop. To me, his name reads three ways: Money owe[s] the man, Soda-man, and, as he himself acknowledges on social media, So Da Man. With a triple entendre for a moniker, the rapper has recently released his latest project, Wock N Roll, on all streaming services. The EP runs five tracks deep, and only has one feature in fellow Atlanta spitter Boregard. Producers include JBAND$, gnarly, HVRMEEZ, DJNC, and STEELOJUGG, while the entire tape is hosted by SWUICE. The video for lead single “Accordion” is out now (check it below), with more visuals on the way soon.
Released on Persona Record Label, the entire project lasts just over 12 minutes and is a breeze to listen to. Recently, I sat down with $ODAMAN for an interview about his musical background, how Wock N Roll came together, and what’s next for him.
What is your earliest memory of music?
I honestly can’t even remember. Probably some African music though. My parents are both Nigerian; the vibes were always ethnic.
What musical history is there in your family?
None really, but shout out to my little brother Sid Shyne. He’s out here making big moves. Ryu’s video going is going thirty as well.
What do you remember about the first song you wrote and recorded?
I used to write little songs for girls back in middle school. The first song I ever recorded was trash. I mean, the beat was crazy. I always felt like I had an ear for good production. Word to all the producers on Wock & Roll.
Who was the first person to call you by your rap name?
I don’t even remember anymore because it is so common now. I swear everybody calls me $oda now… but, of course, my mother’s not conforming yet.
What was your creative process in crafting your new project?
It had a lot to do with “wock” and “roll.” I had late nights after class in the studio. I had recorded so much music that I was like yeah, I got to drop something. I randomly thought of the project title.
How much creative input did you have on the artwork?
It’s funny you ask that. I found this dude on Instagram @boostiiyo. I saw how dope his work was so I called him and told him about the Wock & Roll, Rock & Roll idea I had but it was pretty hard describing how exactly I wanted it. So, at first, he sent me something completely different. But don’t get me wrong, it was fire. It just wasn’t what I meant. He got me right like three days after. Bro is a genius.
What is your label situation currently?
100 percent independent.
What was the first song you wrote for the project?
“Accordion.” I actually dropped it earlier in the year but I wanted to make a tape based around that track.
What was the last song?
“Guappp.”
What are your goals as an artist?
Take over the world (laughs). No, but for real.
What is your impression on the state of the music industry today?
It’s pretty interesting. There are a lot of politics involved. It’s a dog eat dog world. But there is also a lot of under-looked talent, especially coming out of Atlanta. It’s really crazy.
Who are your top five rappers of all time?
In no particular order: Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne.
Can we expect more music videos?
Definitely. The music video for “Run The Game” is done. Shout out to Kharkee with the crazy visuals.
When is the last time you recorded new music?
Last night.
If you could work with anybody, who would it be?
Probably Young Thug or Uno the Activist. Greatest of all time stuff.
