It’s been a couple of years since Pyramid Club’s last release, so when I heard the DKA co-founders were including a remix on Collin Gorman Weiland’s DKA debut, I expected the intricate yet danceable vibe of 2017’s Cyclic Obsession. Instead the duo bypass the Minneapolis native’s frigid and distant universe and shovel “Ballet of Pose” into a primordial soup of deconstructed industrial drums. All the melodic evolution Pyramid Club has teased over the past few years is all but annihilated in the scattered synth lines and clattering drums, and what melody remains winces and shudders, trying to survive each catastrophic second of the track’s runtime. This antithetical take on Weiland’s moody style showcases Pyramid Club’s sense of adventure and technical expertise while exposing a latent decadence to Weiland’s songwriting that pops up unexpectedly throughout In My Shattered Vase.
