The latest single from World War Zach, aka singer-songwriter Zachary Baston, is a warm, affectionate composition that’s dedicated to—and co-written by—his daughter. Despite its sparse acoustic framework, “Pieces of the Moon” paints a vivid portrait with lyrics that reference science fiction, dragons, and the rustic splendor of the natural world. On the surface, that wide-eyed approach might seem frivolous or cartoonish, but the way Baston merges the fantastical with the personal is endearing. Rising far above the “wraiths,” the “dragonhound,” and “Grandad’s war hammer” is a father’s love for his daughter, a solemn promise to nurture and protect.
Recorded at Standard Electric Recorders Co. in the autumn of 2018, the song feels steeped in positive affirmation. Producer Damon Moon has always had an ear for intimacy, and the mix here is bright and welcoming. (It doesn’t hurt that Baston’s voice suggests mid-aughts emo groups like Something Corporate with an unapologetically earnest delivery.) And yet, there’s a hint of sadness lurking within these jangly strums and crisp harmonies. Every young dragon must one day take flight and Baston knows his daughter was “born to fly.”
