While some artists work best alone, micromanaging every aspect of the creative process, others flourish in more collaborative environments. In the case of Athens rockers Wanderwild, what initially began as solo project for singer-songwriter Matt Martin, has since evolved into a formidable four-piece featuring Wes Gregory on drums, Ian White on guitar, and Taylor Cotton on bass. As a result of this transformation, the group has grown into a tighter, more aggressive unit, and evidence of this new dynamic can be heard on the band’s latest single “Andy,” which we’re excited to premiere for you today.
Built on nervy guitars and tightly wound grooves, the song’s brooding, post-punk energy is not entirely removed from the shimmering, melancholic pop and rock of the band’s last EP, but it still marks a clear shift in direction, and perhaps purpose. While it’s never smart to make snap judgments based on a single work, “Andy” finds the band firing on all cylinders with a sound that feels more vivid and forceful, and, hence, impactful.
“‘Andy’ is reflective of a new creative process for us, where each instrument’s voice is relatively uncomplicated, but together they intertwine to make something dynamically and melodically engaging,” the band tells Immersive. “The sum of us as musicians is greater than each of us individually, and none of us is trying to outshine the other. The song explores feelings of romantic frustration as two people fall away from one another. It’s about seeing the writing on the wall and not knowing what to do about it.”
