According to his press release, singer-songwriter Tim Kohler has spent the last several in self-imposed exile, working through a period of immense personal strife and artistic transition. He emerges now with his solo debut in tow—an album five years in the making that seeks to recount portions of his dark ordeal through the lens of an often elegant and refined pop aesthetic. Assisting Kohler in his creative catharsis are a number of familiar Atlanta music faces, including Gus Fernandez (Pony League, Book Club) on drums, Patrick Russert on pedal steel guitar, and Chris Childs (Hello Ocho, Faun and a Pan Flute) on percussion, as well as appearances by Indie Killed the Pop Star’s Jennifer Zuiff and Waller’s Tiffany Blaylock.
Although Thank You For Sharing isn’t scheduled to hit store shelves until August, this we’re morning we’re excited to bring you the premiere of lead single “Dual Diagnosis,” a perky, funked-up tune with a driving beat and irrepressible groove. As the song saunters on, we get a mix of anthemic rock and jaunty prog-pop, all rendered with impressive detail and Broadway-style bombast. The album was recorded and produced by Fantasy Guys’ Mitchell Hardage, who also provides the slick bass line that propels “Dual Diagnosis” forward. Under his steady hand, Kohler’s existential misgivings are coated in bright pop melodies and glittery hooks, reminding us that sometimes it’s better to dance the pain away.
