Rock and roll can be a delicate thing. Push it too hard and something that should be rousing and liberating can quickly sour into something dated and bloated. Atlanta rockers the Pinx are by no means a delicate band, but over the years they’ve proven to hold a deft understanding on how to maintain the balance between high-energy, fist-pumping classic rock and tasteful tunefulness.
“Baby Won’t Ya” is the second single to be unveiled from the band’s upcoming LP, Freedom, and while it’s a cover of the 1971 MC5 classic, my first inclination is that it sounds like local heroes the Black Crowes, only louder and rowdier. Frontman and producer Adam McIntyre attacks the song with a cocksure swagger that’s confident and loose-limbed. After all, there’s no room for modesty when you’re dancing through smoldering power-pop riffs, unleashing volcanic solos, and throwing out hot-blooded come ons like “Baby won’t ya drive me mad / Baby don’t ya let me feel bad / Baby don’t ya leave me alone / Baby won’t ya carry me home.” Rock and roll may be a little worn down and weathered, but the Pinx show there’s still plenty of fire left in them bones.
