In anticipation of the release of their debut EP, local indie rockers Secret Towns have shared the record’s new single “Suburban Fog.” It’s a quiet, mostly reserved number led by spectral guitars that shimmer and reverberate like rain droplets on water. Bandleader Luke Thornton helps deepen the song’s subdued mood with gauzy vocals that drift between earnest soul-searching and meditative reverie: “I can’t tell / Where you are tonight / Did you fade into / Some other dream?”
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Damon Moon at Standard Electric Recorders Co., the track utilizes a combination of barebones simplicity and billowing post-rock tension to maintain its shadowy intimacy. Even the final build-up feels restrained, relying less on cathartic intensity than a shift in atmosphere to drive the song forward. Whether that’s the sound of the fog dissipating or gathering force is up to the listener to decide, but Secret Towns make it worth your while to sit back and stare at the mist.
