Starting earlier this year, Sarah Mootz began stealthily dropping singles. For the most part her songs have been bruised paeans in the vein of Miranda Lambert or other newly-minted members of Nashville songwriting royalty. “Mars,” however, is a striking departure from her past work. Loaded with atmospheric synths and an energetic backbeat, the track presents a fresh and exciting new turn for this young songwriter.

Opening with a hypnotic blend of swooning textures, Mootz lays out the fundamental problem: The world at large seems obsessed with fighting over our differences than adopting a healthy sense of empathy. In response, Mootz yearns to escape to Mars where “we can kick it without everything falling apart.” Throughout the track, she veers between existential crisis and fantastical escape. It’s all tied together with booming choruses and the kind of layered songwriting of just-left-of-the-dial pop artists like Echosmith or Maggie Rogers.

Take a break from the anxious scroll and join Mootz on her celestial journey far from the tethers of modern civilization.
