If Sara Rachele has proven anything in her career it’s that even with relatively minimal accompaniment, she can generate dramatic results. “Sad Song” is a quietly enveloping listen that relies solely on a few fingerpicked chords to set the stage for the singer-songwriter’s wistful musings. Rachele’s plaintive voice and worn-down delivery are perfectly served by this sparse and downtrodden background, resulting in a luminous ballad that shimmers with dead-of-night intimacy.
Although these days she spends the bulk of her time in New York, “Sad Song” is strictly an Atlanta affair. Recorded with bandmate Matthew Pendrick (Slow Parade) and mastered by local producer and engineer Damon Moon, the track was conceived and cut on one of her many visits to her beloved hometown. The overriding atmosphere is pensive and solemn, and you can’t help but wonder how much of Rachele’s mood is caused by her returning to old haunts and coming across ghosts from her past. “It’s here then it’s gone / Just a sad, sweet song,” she croons softly on the chorus. A simple sentiment perhaps, but in Rachele’s hands it becomes a glimmer of hope in an otherwise dreary existential dirge.
